Trying Out for a Team: How to Prepare

Being a part of a team is such an exciting part of an athlete’s career, especially when it’s a team that they’ve been working hard to join. When a team requires tryouts, this particular step can be daunting and a little bit scary for kids and, let’s face it, some adults as well. If you’re going to be trying out for a team in the next couple of months, the team at VolleyCamp Hermosa wants to help you feel confident when you walk into your tryout. That’s why, in today’s blog post, we’re going to go over a few of the different things to help athletes of all ages prepare for a team tryout. Let’s jump right in.

Work on Your Weak Points

Every athlete has weak points, that’s simply the way the world works! When you realize that you have a tryout coming up, start working on your weak points and strengthening them. It’s not a deal-breaker for an athlete to have weak points, but awareness on where they can approve and the drive to get better is something that every coach can appreciate and respect. So, whether there’s a week before the tryouts or a couple of months, spend some time practicing these points so that you can feel even the slightest bit more confident in front of the coaches.

Get a Good Night of Rest

The night before the tryout, make sure that you’re able to get a good night of rest. This will leave you fueled up and energized for the tryouts and activities the next day. Aside from providing you with all of the energy that you need to perform well, a good night of rest can make sure that you’re in the right headspace and have a good attitude — it’s really amazing what a good night of sleep can do for an athlete.

Keep Your Attitude in Check

Every athlete is going to want to walk into a tryout feeling extremely confident, but your attitude is something that you absolutely want to keep in check. Confidence is not at all a bad thing, but you don’t want to be overly confident walking in — that comes across as cocky. Make sure that as you walk into your tryout, you keep your attitude in check and are equally confident in your skills while also being humbled by the opportunity to tryout for a great team.

Plan Ahead

Tryouts are a big deal – there’s no doubt about that. If you have a tryout coming up, you want to make sure that you’ve got your day planned out. The first impression that you make is everything, and being late to a tryout can be the factor that steals this opportunity away from you. So, the week of the tryout, make sure that you have all of the equipment that you need, you have a ride figured out, you’ve double-checked the time, and you don’t have any conflicting events. Now, you can put all of your focus and efforts towards the tryout — a must when you’re wanting to do your very best.
