Tips for Improving Your Setting

Regardless of the sport, everyone has their strong suits and usually a preference in the position that they take during a game or competition. When it comes to volleyball, you don’t get much of a choice in what you do — everyone on the team winds up in every position throughout a game.

If you’re not extremely confident in your setting skills, it can make the change of positions throughout the game daunting — the last thing you want is to let your team down. The good news is, there are various things that you can do to improve your setting, and the team at VolleyCamp Hermosa wants to share them with you.

In today’s blog post, we’re going to go over a few of the things to think about when setting and some things you can keep in mind when you’re having to set the ball for the game. Let’s get started.

Work on Stance

Something that you definitely want to work on when it comes to setting is your stance. Setting a volleyball requires quite a bit of power, so you need to make sure that you’re standing a way that allows your body to conduct powerful moves and set the ball well. Working on grounding your stance and figuring out what is both comfortable and effective is a must.

Stop Backpedaling

When the ball is passed just a little bit too far, most setters will backpedal to try and meet it. Though the intentions of getting the ball are there, the reality is that backpedaling will lead you to lose some control in your stance, and it will most definitely affect the amount of power that you’re able to put into setting. Rather than backpedal, use a crossover step that provides you with balance and power as you work your way towards the ball.

Get the Ball In Place

The placement of the ball is going to make a big difference in how the ball is set, and regardless of how long you’ve played Volleyball — you have some understanding of this. With that being said, when you are passed the ball, adjust the pass to make sure that you’re in a low enough position to volley effectively. You also want to make sure that the ball is above your forehead when you catch it so that you can have a powerful set.
