WHAT IT’S REALLY LIKE TO PLAY ON THE WORLD TOUR – FIVB 1 Star Cambodia

Beach volleyball has taken me a lot of places in this world. I can safely say it’s been a very up and down ride. Ian Satterfield and I walked into this tournament with a lot of confidence and an FIVB Medal within reach. We were well on our way but it wasn’t meant to be. We came out of the FIVB 1 Star in Phnom Penh, Cambodia with a 5th.

At some international tournaments, the players feel like kings. We eat well. We have beautiful hotel rooms with beautiful views. Travel is arranged for us. This wasn’t one of those tournaments. After 28 hours of travel, Ian and I had to find our own taxis and since there wasn’t room at one of the tournament hotels, we originally booked on that was 90 minutes from the tournament. I’ve had a lot of international travel experience so this didn’t really get to me. I’m quite happy to be a Type B person.

I actually PREFER to show up to a country and THEN figure out the details. Every now and then, that causes some undue stress but in my experience, even the best of plans need to get wiped when you’re heading to another country.

I’d probably be happier to say that I’ve won more beach volleyball medals at this point, but the extra days after the the tournament losses… I wouldn’t trade them for much else.
