See Why It’s Called the Mecca of Beach Volleyball

See Why It’s Called the Mecca of Beach Volleyball

We’re a little biased, but we believe Hermosa Beach is the best place in the world. What is it about this tiny beach town that makes it so amazing? If we had to sum it up in 2 words, they would be: beach volleyball.

Walk down the strand between 8 and 10 am on any given weekday, and you will see the sport’s top players practicing in the sand on the permanent courts that are open to the public. When was the last time you casually strolled by an NBA or NFL practice? Or even met the athletes themselves? That’s what it’s like for this sport in Hermosa Beach.  After this stroll, a good way to start the day is with one of our morning classes.

Drawn by the deep sand, high level of competition, and consistently amazing weather enabling players to train nearly every day of the year, pros and players of all levels flock to the place rightfully known as the Mecca of beach volleyball. As head coach Mark Burik says, “you can’t throw a rock in Hermosa from 8-10am without it landing on a court of pros practicing (but please exercise caution and don’t throw rocks at the pros).” It’s like the beach volleyball version of Hollywood.

But it’s not limited to pros. It truly is a lifestyle sport here. You’ll see a huge mural of a beach volleyball player serving on the side of the parking garage.  Convenience stores all over the area also have advertisements featuring the top US beach players. There are just under 2 miles of sand, but over 71 beach volleyball courts (with ongoing discussions of adding more). In addition to pros, on any given weekend, you’ll see people of all ages and skill levels enjoying the sport.

Or maybe you’ll be lucky enough (or plan well enough) to catch a pro tournament. Hermosa Beach and Manhattan beach host some of the most prestigious beach volleyball events in the country.  These include, but are not limited to the Manhattan Beach Open, The Hermosa Beach Open, and the infamous Charlie Saikley 6-man tournament.  And if you’re here between March and November, you can probably compete in a CBVA tournament as well.

You can take in the beach vibes at the various restaurants on Pier Avenue in Hermosa, grab a drink at Hennesey’s with a great view of the sunset, or an amazing margarita at Palmilla, or some savory Brazilian BBQ at Silvio’s.  Bike or go for a long walk to the Manhattan Beach Pier. There you can check out all of the plaques on the pier from past Manhattan Beach Open winners.

We can’t wait for you to join us so we can share this amazing beach volleyball town with you!
